Hello again, everybody

Today I want to talk about a serious subject

Because today is the 50th anniversary

Of the founding of Earth Day

Now Earth Day is a holiday that started in 1970

And was created by a man called Gaylord Nelson

Who was a senator from the state of California

Now Gaylord Nelson was always

very adamant about protecting the environment

And sustaining our natural resources

But, he became especially active with this

After a very massive oil spill

Off the coast of Santa Barbara, California in 1969

With the very first Earth Day on April 22, 1970

Over 20 million people participated

Nowadays, this holiday is celebrated

In over 190 countries worldwide

Making it the largest secular holiday

So today I want to talk about some issues facing our planet

And our environment

And some things that we can do to help out

One of the biggest problems facing our planet right now

Is climate change

Which is being caused by the greenhouse effect

Which is when too much carbon dioxide

is being trapped in the atmosphere

This is causing all the heat that is coming from the sun

To be trapped

被困住

It can't get back out into space

This is causing some very dangerous things

Like the melting of the polar ice caps

Which is causing sea levels to rise

Also, it is melting the permafrost in some regions

Because they are showing record high temperatures

That have never been recorded at that level before

Another thing is that a lot of regions

Are starting to have droughts

Where there's not enough rainfall

because there's not enough moisture

This has led to some regions having very large wildfires

Like the one in Australia not too long ago

We also need to look at our oceans

Which we are basically poisoning

With too much pollution

There's too much plastic waste being thrown into them

Too much garbage

Too much unburnt fuel that's being leaked from ships

Another issue is agricultural runoff

When the chemicals that we use in farming

Like pesticides or fertilizers

Leak into the ocean

These pesticides or fertilizers

Often contain a large amount of nitrogen or phosphorus

Which is something that algae feed on

But if there's too much of this

Then it creates too much algae

Now, this algae

If it's not exposed to sunlight

Then it will start to use oxygen

Which depletes it from the water

And then if there's not enough oxygen in the water

This causes all the fish in the surrounding area

To die

This leads to the creation of something called "dead zones"

Which can be naturally occurring

But in recent years, the numbers have spiked

Because of actions of people

A deadline is just completely hypoxic

Meaning that it is completely devoid of oxygen

So that nothing can actually survive there

And, of course, one last problem affecting our oceans

Is overfishing

We're starting to take way too many fish from the ocean

Which is causing the complete collapse

Of some ecosystems

Another thing

Because of the actions of people

We've entered into a new period of mass extinction

This is the sixth one in history

With the last one being the death of the dinosaurs

With each passing year

More and more species are facing extinction

So mass extinction is defined as

When over fifty percent of species go extinct within

A geographically short time period

So it's not one year

It's not one month

It's not 10 years

It could be 100 years

Or something like that

But, in the grand scheme of things

That is a very short amount of time

2 things that are contributing to this mass extinction

Are deforestation

And desertification

With deforestation

We are cutting down trees at an alarming rate

A rate where the trees can not naturally replace their numbers

Right now it's estimated that every year

We cut down an area of trees the size of the UK

These forest are being cut down

To make room for farmlands

To produce paper products

Or for urban development

For the expanding of living space for humans

This is causing a loss of habitat for animals

And it's destroying plant species

About eighty percent of land

animals and plant species are found in the forests

With desertification

Particularly dry areas

Are starting to become unusable

They're starting to become completely devoid of water

So they can't support life

Both of these things are meaning less and less area

For animals to live in

One of the biggest threats right now

Is that the bees are dying

Some of you might think

Bees are small

They're insignificant

But, with bees

And their pollination

They help to feed us

The bees pollinate the crops that we grow

The food that we eat

And if the bees disappear

Then humanity, as a whole, will have a very very serious problem

Feeding ourselves

The fruits and vegetables that we eat

The flowers that we sniff while we're walking in the park

The trees that we sit under

While we read our books

All of these are pollinated by the bees

The very air that we breathe

Is being produced by the plants

That is pollinated by these bees

Showing how incredibly important they are

A lot of scientists are starting to believe

That we're approaching a point of no return

Which is a point that we won't be able to reverse the damage

That we've done to this world

But it's not completely hopeless yet

There is still time

So, some of the things that we can do to help

Number 1

Use less plastic

Something as simple as buying a reusable water cup

I mean, it's believed that every hour

About 25million plastic bottles

Are thrown into the trash

That's every hour!

So, seriously, just get a reusable cup

It's easy

很容易

Also, don't use plastic bags

If you got to the store

Take your own reusable bag

I know in my home state of New York

They've recently banned all plastic bags

I know they did that in Thailand, too

I'm not sure about other places

But that's something that I support

Number 2

Recycle, or reuse, as much as you can

That's very important

I know that I always take stuff out of the trash

That my wife accidentally throws away

Because I know it's something that can be recycled

Number 3

Conserve water and electricity

Can't stress that enough

Number 4

Try growing your own fruits or vegetables

Try starting your own garden at home

I know that when the weather gets warmer

I'm going to start my own garden

I actually bought some supplies for it today

Also, don't use chemical pesticides

Or anything like that

Chemical fertilizers

化肥

Try to be as natural as you can

If you don't feel like growing your own food

Then try to at least buy locally

You have to realize just how much energy is wasted

Just transporting food

Number 5

If you're able to

Try to plant a tree on this Earth Day

One tree, in one year,

Can absorb 21 kilograms of carbon dioxide in the air

To put that into perspective

One gallon of gas used in a car

Or about 4.7 liters

Produces about 9 kilograms of carbon dioxide

That is released into the atmosphere

Number six

Walk, or ride a bike, if you can

And if it's a bit longer distance

Try to use public transportation

Especially if it's electric transportation

I know the city that I live in in china right now

They're starting to switch the buses

To electric buses

And they've just finished the tram line that I live next to

That's also running off of electricity

Number seven

Don't be lazy

Go out and buy things yourself

Don't depend on delivery

Don't depend on wai mai

Yeah, it's a great thing

But a lot of energy is used

To get you your McDonalds at two o'clock in the morning

The two largest producers of CO2 emissions in the world

Are my home country of America

And my second home country of China

In America, most of it comes from personal use

So our per capita output is much higher

And, in China, most of it comes from industrial output

So, it's up to these two great nations

To set an example for the rest of the world

On maintaining our emissions

Maintaining pollution

And being at the forefront of change

For the future of our world, we must work together
